Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

Do you mean the original statue or the lady whose limbs inspired it? Are they still adorning Rollers with the emblem or is it just the boring RR? Did they also make Bentleys? I thought those were more attractive in a stylish kind of way. If I grew rich I would buy a classic Hispano Suiza with an osp...

Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

I would, but it's a very long way from Minehead. I sometimes meet my daughter around Salisbury, but the drive back along the A303 is frightening. the sun is in your eyes all the way back unless you wait until after sunset. That was a shocking accident. In the long hot summer of 1909 Winston Churchil...

Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

I stopped getting road closure reports because they only said which roads they were, not the nearest village and no useful detail. While a crossing should be a good place to cross, at times, like dead of night the sound of squealing tyres and revving engines might persuade one to wait until it fades...

Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

I've just had my 2nd vaccination and am feeling proud of myself. One of the side effects no doubt. More elation than having given blood, but they don't want mine any more. I hope some nice events will start happening soon. It is a pity that Barleylands is destroyed as a venue for a show. You may hav...

Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

After April 14 should be safe to venture out carefully. Yes, Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe. There is a chapel and Shrine for St Kenelm, the boy King who was murdered at age 7 years by his sister Quenrida's boyfriend. His soul escaped in the form of a dove which dropped a scroll on the altar in Rome w...

Re: Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

We had 5 Shire horses on the farm. They were magnificent. I liked ours much better than the ones a local farmer would parade round the ring at the annual Agricultural show. Dolled up in ribbons and brasses, they impressed the crowd. For me seeing them after their harnesses were taken off after a day...

Stayed in bed to avoid April 1st

Now who's the fool? Must go shopping for hot cross buns. I think I'll pass on the Easter eggs. I've always been very suspicious of the bunny. I liked the Hares that played in the field, but after a few years of wheat, I don't think they'll be back. There are a few livery horses (being boarded for pa...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

My mother told me about her mother being taken to the family farm on the site that is now Longbridge, home of Austin. then i bought petrol from a garage on the A38 at Northfield which was called after the family. Yes I thought that Harry James Fox was your generation, but his name was on the 1939 re...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

The sisters were called Winifred, (never married), Ada Your Mum? and Edith, whose married names were added later. That's why the 1939 lists used for ID cards are so useful. It could have been an earlier Fox who did the walk and his son later followed him into the Coking trade. I think the older brot...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

I've come up with a bit of a family tree, but your Maternal Grandfather seems to have lived a life under the horizon. The tale of his having walked to London from Yorkshire could conceivably have been a story relating to another generation. Often the good family stories attach themselves to one pers...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Email me with a few details of surnames. Did you say you were born in a Derbyshire military hospital? I know your date of birth, but not your middle name if any. From which I could find a birth registration and mother's maiden name. Or tell me that, and her father's burial should be clear. But only ...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Regarding your granddad's death, if his body was recovered, it may be found at Thiepval, either in a marked grave or his name engraved on a cenotaph for those killed but not recovered. The attendants seem to know exactly where to find everyone named. If you have his name and date of birth as well as...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

A friend of mine was struggling in putting in all her qualifications. She could only show her first degree but not her Masters. She had one in Maths and one in Theology. I did my Census return on Saturday night, just before midnight. There seemed to be a lot of questions about "absent friends&q...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Mostly I see. Thank you for your kind thoughts. It seems that four dogs in the parish have died within a short time of each other, all old and very much ailing. I had a very nice card from the vet sympathising, and while I normally don't like company Christmas cards etc this one was very tasteful an...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Cassieopeia had been very poorly, and was losing control big time. When she stopped eating half her food, I knew the time had come. So she just went to sleep. I had been preparing myself for some time, but it's still a wrench. As the poem goes "Never give a dog your heart to tear". I think...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

I think the lamp was trying to tell me something. Antibiotics that taste horrible are no good for a dog on her last legs. I took her to the vet on Friday afternoon and we sent her to sleep. I did the weekly shop and came home on my own. Ever since, the lamp has worked perfectly. Are you using Window...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Standing in the doorway to the garden at 4am, I can assure you it is still colder at night. No difficulty in sleeping, except I'm on call for the duration now. There is a weird mystery in that my touch lamp only works when I go to bed. Once I've turned it off, that's it until bedtime the next night....

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

I'm just looking for funny jokes for the parish magazine. They have good ones in Merseyside magazines, but I can't find the website they are posted on. My cleaners came and went, I persuaded Cassie to take an antibiotic for a nasty ulcer that she is reluctant to leave alone. My gardener came and did...

Re: Not just the March hares are mad

Do you have Cloud storage? You could shift some of your data, especially photographs, up there and make more room on your computer. You may also have a lot of duplicate files sitting there. I have one cloud with BT which I hardly use, one with Live.com. You could set a refrag going just before you g...

Not just the March hares are mad

My cleaners came at 9am and my foot lady (foot health practitioner) came half an hour early then they had to realign the parking priorities so the cleaners could make a clean getaway. The cakes for the vaccination team will go tomorrow so I'll have to bake this afternoon when the heating engineers h...
